Welcoming Guests to Tohoku: A Tranquil Wellness Escape

My name is Maho from Tranquwell.

I recently had the pleasure of accompanying guests on our Tohoku tour. Though my time with them was brief—just a day and a half—it was a wonderful experience, and I was delighted to see them enjoying their first taste of Tohoku!

The crisp Tohoku air nipped at my cheeks as I arrived in Tohoku, but the chill only amplified the region’s serene beauty. Winter’s stillness had settled over the landscape, creating a sense of peace that was truly captivating. This time of year, Tohoku reveals a different side of itself, a quiet majesty that’s both humbling and invigorating.

Our journey began with a delightful introduction to Tohoku’s culinary scene. We savored umen, a delicate noodle dish similar to somen but refreshingly oil-free. It was a light and healthy start to the day, perfectly aligning with the wellness focus of the tour. I appreciated how this simple meal showcased the region’s commitment to fresh, wholesome ingredients.

Next on our itinerary was Shiroishi Castle. Standing atop its castle tower, we were treated to a panoramic vista of Shiroishi town nestled amidst the surrounding mountains. Our knowledgeable local guide shared fascinating insights into Tohoku’s history and unique characteristics, painting a vivid picture of the region’s rich cultural heritage. I learned so much about the area’s traditions and the resilience of its people.

The afternoon brought a truly transformative experience: a sound therapy session in a beautifully preserved traditional Japanese house. As the gentle vibrations and soothing sounds filled the air, I felt myself drifting into a state of profound relaxation. It was as if I was asleep yet fully conscious, a truly remarkable sensation. Even the occasional creak of the old house and the whisper of the wind through the trees seemed to enhance the experience. Our sound therapist explained that these natural sounds were part of the therapeutic process, a reminder of our connection to the natural world. It made perfect sense; the sounds were not distractions, but rather gentle reminders of the larger harmony surrounding us.

Our first day concluded with our guests checking in to Chikusenso, a stunning modern Japanese inn nestled in Zao. The inn’s elegant design seamlessly blended traditional aesthetics with contemporary comforts, creating a truly luxurious and relaxing atmosphere.

The following morning, we greeted the day with a gentle yoga session. Our guest remarked how the breathtaking view of the snow-covered landscape made her body feel truly awakened and invigorated. It was a beautiful way to start the day, connecting with our bodies and the surrounding nature.

After a delicious wholesome breakfast, our guests and guide prepared for a snowshoeing adventure. Sadly, my journey with the group had to end there, as I needed to return to Tokyo. I bid farewell to our group on a perfectly peaceful and sunny morning, feeling a sense of contentment and gratitude for the tranquil experience we had shared. Leaving Tohoku, I carried with me the memory of its quiet beauty, its warm hospitality, and the profound sense of well-being it had instilled in me.
